Pandemic Retracts Tourist Entry in the Country by 53%

About 958,000 tourists entered the country during last year, a reduction by 53% when compared to 2019, which saw about 2 million visitors. At issue are the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, related to restrictive measures.

According to Cândido Langa, National Director of Tourism, quoted by the newspaper “O País”, although the country is registering gradual relaxation of restrictive measures against covid-19, the improvement, in this sector also severely affected by the pandemic, is still premature.

“The tourism sector reviews the measures adopted by the Government. It, in itself, its normal course is to break any kind of protocol. So, it is fundamental to combine these two aspects.”

About the tourism scenario in the coming months, Cândido Langa said that it may have a new guise, but that depends on the improvement of the current health situation.

The covid-19 pandemic caused a 70% drop in revenues worldwide.
