US Announces $250M to Support Climate Adaptation in Africa

The United States announced today at COP27 a global contribution of $250 million (about €240 million) to finance actions to support climate adaptation in Africa, the State Department announced.

US Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry, quoted in the statement, emphasized the United States’ commitment to help vulnerable countries and communities in Africa adapt to and manage the impacts of climate change, as part of President Joe Biden’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE).

Part of the announced amount, 150 million dollars (around 144 million euros) is aimed at accelerating the implementation of the plan in Africa, and the remaining 100 million dollars (96 million euros) are contributions pledged by the private sector and philanthropic actions, detailed in the statement from the State Department, equivalent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The announcement was made at an event co-hosted by the US and Egypt, regarding Joe Biden’s visit to the Climate Conference (COP27), which is taking place in the Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.

The US contribution “includes the US response to the UN Secretary General’s call for an Early Warning for All over the next five years” and “will enable the Africa Adaptation Initiative to launch a new Food Security Accelerator, as well as support the launch of the Cairo Centre of Learning and Excellence in Adaptation and Resilience”.
