Donald Trump is threatening severe 100% tariffs on Russia if a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine is not reached within 50 days. The U.S. President says the conflict must urgently come to an end.
On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump set a 50-day deadline for Russia to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine, or else he will impose a harsh tariff package.
After expressing dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin — with whom he claimed to have already formalized four agreements to end the conflict — Trump explained that the tariff to be imposed on Moscow would be 100%.
The statesman made the remarks during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, where he justified his stance by saying that trade is “excellent for solving wars.”
The sanctions will also include punitive measures against third parties maintaining trade relations with Moscow.
In addition to imposing severe tariffs, Trump said he will send advanced weaponry to NATO in support of Ukraine, with the costs covered by member countries of the military alliance.
On Tuesday morning, Moscow responded to Trump’s threats. The Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, downplayed the announcement, saying that Russia “does not care.”
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump for the announcement and accused Russia of trying to normalize the war.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has continued since February 2022.
