The United States announced on Sunday the death of another member of its armed forces, raising the American military death toll to 17, as Washington launched fresh air strikes against Iran while Tehran fired missiles toward Jordan.
Step by step, Washington and Tehran have moved closer to all-out war, as the provisional agreement reached last month — intended to permanently end the fighting — collapsed and maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz virtually ceased. Both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure on which millions of people depend.
The US Armed Forces reported that an American soldier died on Saturday in Iraq during the ‘controlled detonation’ of an Iranian drone that had been shot down.
Earlier, US military officials stated that their strikes were targeting Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in retaliation for the deaths of American troops in Jordan on Friday. One soldier remained missing following that attack and, according to a new statement released Sunday, ‘unidentified human remains’ had been recovered and were being examined.
Since the start of the war, 17 American military personnel have been killed.
The resumption of hostilities, now entering their second week, has led the United States to intensify strikes against bridges, desalination plants, and electrical infrastructure inside Iran. Tehran, for its part, has struck Washington’s allied nations across the Middle East.
Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain reactivated their air defence systems to intercept approaching Iranian missiles and drones. Israel warned that missiles fired toward Jordan could bring the conflict into Israeli territory for the first time in weeks.
