Iran’s Supreme Leader Calls on Muslim Nations to Unite Against US and Israel

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Sunday called on Muslim countries to unite against the United States and Israel in a written message issued six months after the outbreak of the war in the Middle East. Khamenei, who succeeded his father Ali Khamenei — killed on the first day of the offensive against Iran on 28 February — has not been seen in public since.

‘The solution to the problems of the Ummah [Muslim community] lies in the unity of word, friendship and cooperation on the path of good,’ he declared in the message published on his official portal, as cited by French news agency AFP.

‘Whoever, in whatever position they hold, does something that causes division among Muslims and creates conflict within the Muslim community — knowingly or unknowingly, voluntarily or involuntarily — has served the objectives of the enemies of Islam,’ he said.

Khamenei urged leaders of countries in the region to ‘recognise the true enemy, understand their plan and confront it,’ identifying the United States and Israel as enemies of all nations, not Iran alone.

In response to the Israeli-American offensive, Iran has targeted Washington’s regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. Tehran’s relations with regional capitals have deteriorated significantly since then.

Khamenei, who holds final authority over Iran’s major policy directions, once again called on Iranians to set aside internal differences and unite in the struggle against the country’s enemies.

He stated that divisions within the Iranian people must ‘under no circumstances be allowed to emerge.’

In a separate written statement issued on Friday, he had declared it forbidden to ‘do anything’ that would harm social cohesion. He also called for the progressive de-dollarisation of the Iranian economy and for a strengthening of domestic production to revive economic activity.

‘Whoever, in whatever position they hold, does something that causes division among Muslims and creates conflict within the Muslim community — knowingly or unknowingly, voluntarily or involuntarily — has served the objectives of the enemies of Islam,’ he reiterated.

Iran has been subject to a US naval blockade for several months and has faced international sanctions for decades, which Washington announced on Monday would be further tightened.

In addition to targeting American interests across the region, Iran has responded to the Israeli-American offensive by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s petroleum products are transported.

The blockade has raised fears of a crisis in a global economy already strained by the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began in February 2022. The Middle East war has claimed thousands of lives over six months, in a region long marked by chronic conflicts, including the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
