Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian announced on Monday, 29 June, that Iran will receive $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds held in Qatar, under the terms of a memorandum of understanding signed with the United States.
"Of a total of $12 billion in Iranian funds in Qatar, $6 billion will be released and repatriated to the country, while efforts are under way to recover the remainder of these resources," Pezeshkian said during a meeting with Ayatollah Musa Shabiri Zanjani in the city of Qom.
In a statement published on his official portal, Pezeshkian also defended the memorandum signed with the United States as a "great victory for the Iranian people", emphasising that Washington had suspended sanctions on oil and petrochemical products.
The memorandum of understanding, signed on 17 June, was put under strain after Iran and the United States exchanged attacks in recent days over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically critical waterway for global oil trade.
Iran has asserted sole authority over traffic through the Strait, warning that any attempt to reopen routes not controlled by Tehran "will delay the reopening" of the passage. Washington has opposed this position.
According to US news portal Axios, the United States and Iran agreed to halt the bombardments of recent days and are set to meet this week in Qatar.
