India: Police Say There May Be No Survivors in Plane Crash

In India, police have admitted that there may be no survivors among the passengers of the Air India plane that crashed today in the city of Ahmedabad, and that the accident may have also caused casualties on the ground.

Local police commissioner G.S. Malik, quoted by the American news agency Associated Press (AP), said that “it appears there are no survivors in the plane crash.”

Malik also acknowledged ground fatalities, stating:
“The plane crashed in a residential area, including office buildings. The accident caused additional victims,” he added.

The Indian news channel NDTV reported that at least five people died and several others were injured after Air India flight AI171 crashed into a student residence for medical students. The fatalities include four university students and one resident doctor from BJ Medical College, who were inside the building at the time of impact, according to NDTV and the Spanish news agency EFE.

The plane crashed with full fuel tanks, having just taken off from Ahmedabad airport, a city of over five million inhabitants in northwestern India.

The Air India aircraft, on a flight between Ahmedabad and London, was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.

According to Air India, the passenger list includes seven Portuguese nationals, along with 169 Indians, 53 British citizens, and one Canadian.
