IMF Warns Global Monetary System “Not Prepared” for Artificial Intelligence Risks

The global monetary system is not prepared to face the growing risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI), warned International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Sunday (12), at a time when a new model from Anthropic (an AI company) is raising urgent cybersecurity concerns.

Georgieva’s comments come on the eve of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, and follow emergency talks held last week by US regulators with major banks over the new artificial intelligence model.

“We do not have the capacity, as a global community, to protect the international monetary system against large-scale cyber risks,” she told CBS News on Face the Nation.

“We are very committed to seeing greater attention to the safeguards needed to protect financial stability in a world with AI,” she added, calling for global cooperation on the issue.

“Yes, this is an issue that has been addressed here in the US, but it can easily arise in other parts of the world, which is why we need cooperation,” she stressed.

Anthropic announced on April 7 that it is limiting the rollout of its new Mythos model due to risks linked to its unprecedented ability to rapidly identify security vulnerabilities.

The company said it is working with a consortium of major US firms to test the model, raising concerns that foreign companies could be excluded from essential security preparations.
