The Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, advocated greater flexibility in the implementation and operationalisation of the agreement on mobility in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), in order to boost the development of Member States.
Speaking during an audience granted to the executive secretary of the CPLP, Zacarias da Costa, the statesman recalled on the occasion that the agreement provides for greater movement of citizens of the nine CPLP countries, and it is therefore important that the parties pay special attention to this treaty.
“So far, the countries that have ratified the agreement were Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Brazil, East Timor and Angola, missing Equatorial Guinea. Even so, the Community’s citizens continue to suffer barriers to their mobility,” he stressed.
In his turn, Zacarias Da Costa said that the slowness in the effectiveness of the mobility agreement is a concern for all, due to the constraints faced by some citizens.
“For example, Portuguese and Brazilians can already enter Mozambique without visas, but Mozambicans still need visas, so this is an issue that at a bilateral level the countries will have to deepen. We all understand that the implementation and operationalisation of the agreement is not easy,” he explained.
According to the official, the visa waiver is one of the modalities provided for in the agreement. However, its implementation will always require additional partnerships between member states.
Zacarias da Costa arrived in Mozambique on Monday, 3 July, for a visit that will extend until Saturday, 8 July, with several events on the agenda, including the 7th International Congress on Environmental Education of the CPLP countries and the Global Event on Human Rights that has been taking place since Wednesday morning.
