The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, appealed this Monday, 15 July, in Maputo, to the constitutional courts of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) to be factors of peace and stability, through the protection of human dignity.
“The effective functioning of the constitutional courts is a factor of peace, stability and a guarantee of respect for human dignity and fundamental rights,” said the statesman, quoted by the Lusa news agency.
The head of state was speaking at the opening of the 6th Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CJCPLP), which kicked off today in Maputo.
“The constitutional jurisdictions are a fundamental pillar of the Democratic Rule of Law, they are the guardians of the Constitution, who assume responsibility for defending the constitutional order and materialising constitutional justice,” emphasised the Mozambican President.
Nyusi emphasised that the magistrates who work in those bodies must be exposed to public criticism, given that they play an essential role in the administration of justice, and urged the constitutional courts to be sharp in monitoring the interdependence between the various powers, stressing that collaboration must be done in strict compliance with constitutional legality.
The head of state also defended the need to educate the population about fundamental laws in order to provide citizens with the knowledge to defend human dignity, and took the opportunity to emphasise that the conference is one of the ways to strengthen ties between the countries of the community, which has its roots in common history and language.
The 6th Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Portuguese-Speaking Countries is being held under the theme “Constitutional Jurisdictions and Other Powers”.
