Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa Defends Mauritius’ CPLP Membership, Says Proximity Can Help Mozambique

The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said on Tuesday that Mauritius should join the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), at the closing session of EurAfrican, which ends today.

“Yes, absolutely,” replied Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa when asked by the moderator of the conversation with the president of Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, at the Presidential Dialogue they held this afternoon at the closing session of the Eurafrican Forum.

“The CPLP, year after year, has an increasing number of observers; almost all the major powers are observers of the CPLP on the various continents, including Asia,” the Portuguese head of state said, who recalled the importance of Angola and Mozambique in the regional context of Mauritius.

Earlier, when asked if he intended to move from observer status in the CPLP to full membership, the head of state of Mauritius did not give a direct answer but said that it was important to “encourage Mauritian students to learn Portuguese, with the support of the CPLP” and added that this proximity “can help relations with Mozambique”, the closest Lusophone country to Mauritius.
