CPLP: Portuguese-Speaking Central Banks Create Network to Strengthen Cooperation and International Influence

The governors and presidents of the central banks of Portuguese-speaking countries announced the creation of the Network of Central Banks of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (BCPLP), an initiative aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation and knowledge sharing among these institutions.

The decision was made on the sidelines of the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, taking place April 13–18 in Washington, D.C., bringing together financial leaders from around the world.

According to a statement from the Bank of Portugal, the creation of the network stems from the need to structure and make permanent the joint work that had already been underway among Portuguese-speaking central banks.

“The creation of the BCPLP network reflects the growing importance of building bridges between the institutions of our countries, reinforcing, structuring, and making permanent the joint work that has already been carried out,” the statement reads.

The document also emphasizes that knowledge sharing and cooperation among members will enable them to carry out their missions more effectively, adding that aligning positions could strengthen the international relevance of these institutions.

The network will operate under a rotating annual presidency, allowing each central bank to contribute topics of common interest to the agenda that are deemed relevant for further joint discussion.

“Each central bank will bring to the network’s agenda topics of common interest that it considers particularly relevant and on which it wishes to deepen the discussion,” explained the Bank of Portugal.

The first official meeting of the BCPLP is scheduled for November 2026 in Luanda, Angola. The Bank of Portugal will hold the initial presidency during 2027, under a model that also provides for regular meetings and the creation of technical working groups, with a view to sharing experiences and best practices.
