Macau Promotes Products from Portuguese-Speaking Countries in Southeast China

The Macau authorities announced today that they will take 28 local companies, including several that sell products from Portuguese-speaking countries, to a promotional activity in southeast China, starting on Thursday.

The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said in a statement that Macao Week in Xiamen will run from 26 to 31 October in a popular pedestrian street in this coastal city in Fujian province.

The activity will include an exhibition and sales area, where the 28 companies – four of which are newcomers – will be able to promote products from the nine Portuguese-speaking countries, including alcoholic beverages, coffee and health and personal care products, the IPIM said.

As well as being able to buy Portuguese-speaking products, visitors will be able to take part in games whose prizes include “treats from Portuguese-speaking countries and Portuguese-style gifts”, it added.

During Macau Week in Xiamen, there will also be live broadcast sessions on social media with Chinese Internet celebrities, during which Internet users will be able to order Portuguese-speaking products, IPIM said.

The institute will also set up a space to promote “Macau’s role as a service platform for business co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries”.

On 26 October, IPIM will hold a business exchange session that will bring together businesspeople from Xiamen and Macau, including a display of products from Portuguese-speaking countries and food and drink tastings.

For several years now, the Macau government has been advocating the need to invest in the provision of financial services between China and the Portuguese-speaking bloc in order to diversify the economy of the Chinese special administrative region, which is heavily dependent on tourism.

At the end of August, IPIM launched a similar activity, Macau Week in Tianjin, a city close to the capital, Beijing, in northern China.
