The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could be turned into a weapon if clear global control rules are not established.
Guterres made the warning on Wednesday during a UN Security Council debate, stating that AI has the potential to become a weapon and calling for proper regulation.
He acknowledged that the question is no longer whether AI will influence international peace and security, but rather how that influence will be shaped.
According to the UN Secretary-General, AI could be transformed into a weapon if safeguards are not implemented, urging governments to regulate this technology.
Guterres emphasized that while AI has the potential to save lives and improve crisis response, it could also cause irreversible harm, including cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, information manipulation, and uncontrolled military use.
For Guterres, human control over AI must be a priority, because technology should serve humanity, not threaten it. Innovation must benefit humanity—not undermine it.
Without proper safeguards, AI could also be weaponized, and recent conflicts have become testing grounds for targeting and autonomous applications of this technology.
