The Angolan electricity system operator will release water from the Laúca and Cambambe dams on Thursday, and warned today that this could affect people living in the lower Kwanza.
In a press release, Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade-EP (Rnt) says that it is urgent to open the floodgates of the Laúca hydroelectric dams in Malanje province and Cambambe dams in Kwanza Norte province, “which will have a negative impact on the daily lives of people living in the lower Kwanza region”.
The discharges are due to the natural evolution of the Kwanza River’s flows, explains the company.
In order to safeguard against the adverse effects resulting from the rise in the river’s water level, the technical committee has already contacted the Civil Protection and Fire Services of Kwanza Norte and Malanje, as well as the traditional authorities, to take the necessary preventative measures.
“The technical commission appeals for the maximum attention of the population, as well as the collaboration of the aforementioned institutions, with a view to the success of the preventive measures indicated,” the statement said.
