Angola’s Unemployment Rate Rose to 32.4% in Q1 2024

The unemployment rate in Angola rose to 32.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2024, with the youngest being the hardest hit by unemployment, which affects 63.5 per cent of young people between the ages of 15 and 24.

According to data from the Angolan National Statistics Institute (INE), the unemployment rate for the population aged 15 to 24 rose by 9.1 per cent in the first three months of 2024 compared to the previous quarter (58.3 per cent), while the unemployment rate for the population aged over 15 saw a less significant increase in quarterly terms (from 31.9 per cent to 32.4 per cent).

In the first quarter of this year, 181,368 more Angolans aged 15 or over (working age population) became unemployed, totalling 5,646,659 people (a quarterly variation of 3.3%).

Among Angolans aged 15 to 24, the unemployed population rose to 3,737,150, with 286,183 more young people unemployed.

Among the working-age population (17,414,877), 11,768,218 people worked, with an estimated employment rate of 60.2 per cent, slightly higher in rural areas and among the male population (61.6 per cent compared to 59 per cent of women).

The 35-44 and 45-54 age groups concentrate the largest number of people in employment, according to the Angolan Employment Survey (IEA).

Almost half of the people (47.5 per cent) work in agriculture, hunting and fishing, followed by commerce with 22.6 per cent.

The majority of people employed (79.8 per cent) are in the informal sector, of which 70.7 per cent are men and 88.5 per cent women.

The IEA is a sample survey aimed at households living in Angola. A total of 10,944 households are selected each quarter, 6,036 in urban areas and 4,908 in rural areas.
