Angola’s International Reserves Near $15bn in Second Quarter

Angola's international reserves reached $14.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026, equivalent to approximately €12.8 billion and sufficient to cover 6.7 months of imports of goods and services.

The figures are contained in the External Statistics Information Note published by the Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA), which also points to an improvement in the country's current account during the period under review, according to Lusa.

The central bank reported that the current account recorded a surplus of more than $2 billion — approximately €1.7 billion — equivalent to 4.4% of gross domestic product (GDP). The balance represents growth of 40.1% compared with the previous quarter, driven primarily by an increase in the goods account surplus, which advanced 31.7%.

The improvement came despite a widening of deficits in the services and primary income accounts, which deteriorated by 8.7% and 67.7% respectively. The capital and financial account recorded a deficit of $2.5 billion in the second quarter, compared with $1.2 billion in the preceding three months.

According to the BNA, the deterioration was linked primarily to the behaviour of medium- and long-term capital flows, including public external debt, as well as the performance of foreign direct investment and other capital flows — notably trade credits, advances, and deposits held with non-residents. Angola's international investment position also worsened, with the deficit widening by approximately $174.5 million.

The central bank attributed this development mainly to an increase in the country's liabilities to non-resident entities. The data show that, notwithstanding the deficit recorded in the financial account and the deterioration of the international investment position, Angola maintained in the second quarter a level of reserves sufficient to cover nearly seven months of imports.
