Rail services from Luanda to the provinces of Cuanza Norte and Malanje were restored on Thursday (30 July), eight days after operations were suspended following the derailment of a gas tanker train, the Caminho-de-Ferro de Luanda (CFL) announced.
In an official statement, CFL said services resumed after the completion of repair works on the line section between the stations of Qunzenza, in Malanje province, and Lucala, in Cuanza Norte.
The first train to depart following the resumption was scheduled for Friday, leaving from the Musseques station in Luanda bound for Malanje and hauling gas tanker wagons.
A second train, towing six general cargo wagons, was set to depart from Lucala station heading to the Angolan capital.
‘Rail circulation has thus been restored along the entire Caminho-de-Ferro de Luanda network,’ the statement read.
The accident occurred on 22 July and involved a train travelling from Malanje station, consisting of a C30 locomotive and ten empty tanker wagons. The train derailed, with one of the wagons also leaving the tracks. No casualties were reported.
At the time, CFL identified the likely cause of the derailment as the advanced state of deterioration of the 215-kilometre track section between Zenza do Itombe and Cacuso.
