Angola: Unemployment Rate Drops to 29.4% in Q1 2025

Angola’s unemployment rate stood at 29.4% in the first quarter of 2025, down three percentage points compared to the same period last year, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Data reviewed by Lusa from the Rapid Information Sheet of the Employment Survey shows that the most significant drop occurred among younger people aged 15 to 24, where the unemployment rate fell from 63.5% to 54.3%.

Most of the jobs created were in the informal sector, which now accounts for nearly 81% of the employed population, estimated at 10,353,727 people — an increase of 964,417 people compared to the same quarter last year. Among them, 89.4% of women work in informal employment.

Among Angola’s working-age population (those aged 15 or older), 12.8 million people reported having worked during this period — whether as employees, self-employed, or in a family business — while 5.3 million said they had no paid work.

The employment rate was estimated at 63.2%, and 37.9% in the 15–24 age group.

In Q1 2025, the employed population increased by 8.9% year-on-year, with more than half (50.7%) working primarily in agriculture, livestock, hunting, forestry, and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade at 20.1%.
