Angola: UN Global Compact Brings Together 65 Companies in the Country

The United Nations (UN) Global Compact in Angola, officially launched this Monday (11) in Luanda, already has 65 member companies, according to the executive director for the country, Eliana Santos.

The network aims to strengthen sustainable business practices and support organizations in adopting international standards for sustainability, transparency, and good governance, following principles aligned with the areas of human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.

Eliana Santos noted that the work began four years ago with a survey of the Angolan market to identify companies already taking action in the areas of sustainability.

“Initially, our strategy was to focus on the financial sector, where we know companies have a greater appetite for these issues. Currently, there are 65 companies committed to the United Nations Global Compact,” she emphasized.

Each year, companies will have to report their progress through a dedicated platform, Santos explained, emphasizing that by joining the network, companies become not only more sustainable but also more responsible in conducting their business and more attentive to required international standards.

Created by the United Nations, the Global Compact currently brings together more than 25,000 participants in over 100 countries and is considered the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

According to Sanda Ojiambo, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, there are currently 65 networks worldwide, ten of which are in Africa, and the Angolan network will join more than 1,000 companies on the African continent.

According to a statement from the Global Compact, the new network’s priorities include recruiting companies and launching initiatives aligned with national priorities and the Compact’s principles.

The organization also aims to promote capacity-building programs and cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries through partnerships with networks in Brazil, Portugal, and Mozambique.
