Angola Secures Energy Future With Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal (TOBD)

Angolan President João Lourenço inaugurated the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal (TOBD) on Monday in Bengo Province, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure development.

The facility, with a storage capacity of 580,000 cubic metres of gasoline and diesel and 102,000 cubic metres of cooking gas, is expected to significantly enhance Angola’s energy security and the efficiency of the National Oil Company (Sonangol).

Prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Head of State, accompanied by First Lady Ana Dias Lourenço and other high-ranking government officials, attended a presentation detailing the history and strategic importance of the US$642 million project. Following this, he participated in a guided tour of the newly commissioned facility, highlighting its role in ensuring a more efficient, secure, and cost-effective fuel reception and distribution system.

The TOBD is a strategic asset for Angola, providing much-needed onshore storage capacity and addressing key logistical challenges in the country’s oil sector. The infrastructure will not only enhance domestic fuel security but also facilitate the safe and efficient handling of refined petroleum products. This is particularly important as Angola seeks to reduce operational risks and costs associated with fuel imports and distribution.

Beyond meeting national fuel needs, the TOBD will serve as a regional hub for fuel storage and trading, allowing Angola to offer commercial storage services to neighbouring markets. The facility’s expanded storage capacity also enables the creation of strategic fuel reserves, further strengthening the country’s energy resilience.

The commissioning of this terminal represents a significant advancement in Angola’s energy infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to economic stability and long-term energy security. With this investment, Angola is positioning itself as a key player in the regional fuel supply chain, ensuring a more robust and self-sufficient oil sector for the future.
