Angola Searches for Oil and Other Hydrocarbons in Onshore Blocks

The National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) and the Angolan state oil company have hired a specialised service to identify the presence of oil and other hydrocarbons in the area of the onshore blocks of the Kwanza Basin.

In a press release, ANPG, the concessionaire and regulator of the sector, said that, in collaboration with Sonangol Exploração e Produção, it had decided to go ahead with the acquisition of geological data, in a project that will begin in September this year, in order to improve geophysical and geological knowledge of the aforementioned blocks.

To this end, it has contracted ‘a specialised service for the acquisition of gravimetric data, which includes the study and analysis of residues, and magnetometric data, which refers to the degree of magnetisation, in the Onshore Blocks of the Kwanza Basin, which covers the provinces of Luanda, Malanje and Kwanza-Norte, namely Blocks KON-11, KON-12 and KON-15.

The project will be carried out by the Striped-Horse and Metatek consortium, and ‘uses Airborne and FTG technology to collect fundamental data for the preparation of high-resolution geophysical maps’, says the note, emphasising that the first part of the contract comprises data collection and processing, lasting 45 days.

This work will be carried out using a specialised aircraft, in an operation with less impact on the environment, they guarantee, and the final results of the study will be delivered by the consortium in the first quarter of 2025.

‘The data acquired will make it possible to identify variations in the properties of the rocks, indicating the presence of geological structures that may contain oil and other hydrocarbons, in the light of the Exploration Strategy carried out by the ANPG,’ the statement said.

This initiative is considered by the Agency to be ‘a significant step forward in the commitment to mapping and understanding regional geology, as well as assessing the prospective potential of the blocks operated (KON 11 and KON 12) and to be operated (KON 15) by Sonangol Exploration & Production in the Kwanza Land Basin’.
