The Luele Mining Company, in Saurimo (Lunda-Sul), inaugurated its second thermal power plant this Thursday (27), aimed at fully supplying the company’s prospecting, exploration, and diamond-processing operations.
Inaugurated by the chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, Rômulo Mucase, the facility includes 25 generator units with an installed capacity of 25.8 megawatts, machine rooms, a control room, and five tanks with a total storage capacity of 360,000 litres, in an investment valued at more than eight million dollars.
On the occasion, Luele’s executive director and head of equipment maintenance, Manuel Landamo, recalled that the project began in 2023 and was completed this year to support the company’s ongoing activities. He stressed that meeting the mine’s energy demand requires 26 megawatts, and the company’s management is working to reach this target. He noted that the new thermal power plant will make it possible to extend electricity to areas adjacent to the mine and improve public lighting.
Manuel Landamo also pointed out that the mine consumes 28,000 litres of diesel per day, a cost that could be reduced if the province had a higher-capacity hydroelectric dam.
