According to data from the fire brigade consulted by Lusa on Wednesday, Angola has recorded five deaths, three missing, and six injured in the last 24 hours, caused by heavy rains in the provinces of Luanda, Bié, Huambo, and Cuanza Norte.
According to a 24-hour report from the National Civil Protection and Fire Service, four people from the same family died in Bié, hit by lightning, while the fifth person died in Cuanza Norte.
As for the missing, two children, aged 4 and 7, are missing in Kwanza Norte, swept away by the force of the water, and a third person in Luanda, when he was helping people cross a drainage ditch.
The injured are from Huambo province, as a result of a house collapsing.
The rains also caused flooding, destruction and collapse of houses, social infrastructure, falling trees, and left several main, secondary and tertiary roads impassable.
During the same period, moderate rainfall was recorded, with no human or material damage, in the provinces of Benguela, Uíje, Lunda Norte, Zaire, Cuando Cubango and Malanje.
Luanda province, Angola’s capital, recorded rain throughout its territory, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, which resulted in landslides, damage to property and flooding.
The figures show that 576 people were affected by flooding, a hundred homes were damaged, power stations and churches were damaged, ravines progressed, roads were flooded, restricting the movement of people and goods, and landslides occurred.
