Angola: Brazilian Government Presents Investment Proposal for the Agricultural Sector

On Tuesday (20), the Brazilian Government presented Angola with its proposal for investment in food production, technology transfer, and agricultural cooperation, with four large Brazilian business groups already identifying cereals as areas of activity, Lusa reported.

According to the agency, the information was released by Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Favaro, at the end of a meeting with Angola’s economic team, led by Angolan Minister of State for Economic Coordination, José de Lima Massano.

Speaking to the press, Carlos Favaro said that another step had been taken in the cooperation agreements between Brazil and Angola in the agricultural sector for food production, with a visit to Brazil by the Angolan side scheduled for March to finalize technical details for the start of operations.

“We made a point of formally bringing the Brazilian proposal generated by a working group with producers, entrepreneurs, and the Brazilian government for investments in Angola, technology transfer, and cooperation, so that Brazilians and Angolans can produce more in these soils that have been identified as having great potential,” said Favaro.

The project, Favaro continued, also includes the construction of infrastructure, such as warehouses and irrigation systems, provided for in the BNDES financing program.

“Angola has already been investing in railways and highways, but there is also a need for investment in grain storage and irrigation properties, in addition to equipment and machinery. Brazil has the technology and is willing to provide financing so that this machinery and equipment can be installed and operated here in Angola,” he said.

According to the Brazilian minister, prospecting has already been carried out in several areas, and around 25 to 30 Brazilian business groups have joined forces and are developing a model for joint investment in infrastructure and operations in various regions of Angola.

For his part, Angolan Secretary of State for Forests João da Cunha said that in the first phase, production areas in the provinces of Cuanza Norte, Uíje, and Malanje were identified to start the process, with “plenty of land available” in Moxico Leste, Cuando, Cubango, Lunda Norte, and Lunda Sul.

At least around 20,000 hectares of land are available to start the project, according to João da Cunha, who pointed out that “there are already very concrete actions in the country” with Brazilian businesspeople in direct contact with Angolan companies, setting up companies under Angolan law.
