Angola and the United States signed an air services agreement on Tuesday in Luanda, and another that covers services in the field of Defence, Angola’s Foreign Ministry announced.
The two legal instruments were signed as part of the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The air services agreement aims to promote a competitive international aviation system and reduce government interference, facilitating safe and secure international air transport.
This agreement establishes overflight and stay rights, as well as encouraging fair competition between the airlines of both countries.
With regard to Agreement 505, on training and other services in the field of Defence, it establishes the conditions for providing training and other services under the International Military Education and Training Programme (IMET).
The secretary of state signed the two agreements for international cooperation and Angolan communities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Domingos Custódio Vieira Lopes, and the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary accredited to Angola, Tulinabo Mushingi.
According to the note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ‘the agreements represent a significant advance in cooperation’ between Angola and the United States, as well as consolidating a mutual commitment in favour of economic development, security and regional stability.
The United States ‘supports Angola’s efforts to combat corruption, increase accountability, promote democratic governance and support the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms,’ the note added.
