Angola's National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG), the country's petroleum concessionaire, announced on Wednesday that drilling and testing operations at the Katambi-2 appraisal well, located in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin, have confirmed the presence of high-quality gas reservoirs.
The announcement was made jointly by the ANPG and Sonangol Exploração & Produção, the operator of Block 24, in a statement cited by the Lusa news agency.
According to the document, the Katambi-2 well was drilled 1.3 kilometres from Katambi-1, penetrating two productive intervals with a combined thickness of approximately 331 metres. The results confirm the existence of good-quality reservoirs, with average porosity of between 9% and 12% and permeability exceeding that recorded at Katambi-1, which was drilled in 2014–2015.
Initial tests recorded stabilised production of 41 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd) and 1,160 barrels per day of condensates (BBL/d), with no presence of water or hydrogen sulphide, "reinforcing the economic viability of developing the discovery and its potential contribution to optimising national production."
"This is the first complete drill stem test (Complete DTS) carried out on a non-associated gas reservoir in Angola. A preliminary assessment of the test results indicated that the well has the potential to produce more than 100 MMscfd," the statement reads.
