Angola: 8,000 Expected to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Independence

The Angolan government expects around 8,000 nationals and foreigners, invited from 70 countries, to take part in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, which will take place on 11 November 2025.

The General Programme for the Commemorations marking the 50th anniversary of national independence, which will take place under the slogan: ‘Angola 50 years: Preserving and Valuing the Achievements Made, Building a Better Future’, was approved today by the cabinet, under the guidance of the Angolan President, João Lourenço.

Speaking to the press, the minister of state and head of the President’s Civil Staff, Adão de Almeida, said that the government believed that there would be a great day of national mobilisation, in which “all citizens are invited to reflect deeply on 50 years of life as an independent country”.

Adão de Almeida pointed out that the festivities would start on 11 November this year until December 2025, with a vast array of activities, more than 115 acts, at central level, to which provincial, municipal and diplomatic missions would be added.

‘The celebrations range from sectoral reflection and stocktaking activities, through conferences and beyond, in the most diverse fields. There is a wide range of cultural and sporting activities, as well as political ones,’ said Adão de Almeida.

A speech by the Angolan head of state and a civic and military parade are planned for 11 November 2025.

Today’s cabinet meeting was also scheduled to analyse the infrastructure inauguration plan and the work being done to include almost 100 central projects in the general plan of celebrations.

The programme includes tributes to various Angolans who, throughout the 50 years of independence and before, made their contribution to the liberation of Angola and the achievement of peace, ‘and there should be a specific programme of decorations for Angolan citizens and, possibly, some foreigners’.

The government is also encouraging the participation of civil society with its own events, ‘which otganise activities in different areas’.

‘From residents’ committees, which at neighbourhood level can promote activities, can decorate the streets, to the various socio-professional organisations and other entities. The aim is for 2025 to be a year of celebration, reflection and joint preparation for the future of our country,’ he emphasised.

With regard to the budget for the celebrations, Adão de Almeida said that each sector will carry out its actions within the allocated funds.

‘We’re not planning an extraordinary dynamic, outside the usual, we’re going to convert the annual activities of the sectors, to combine with the celebrations of the 50 years of national independence, when the General State Budget is approved, each of the sectors will include its activity in the respective budget,’ he explained.
