Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed into law legislation extending his mandate by two years, allowing him to remain in power until 2030, government spokesman Nick Mangwana announced on Tuesday.
Both chambers of the Zimbabwean parliament passed the bill last month.
“Signed, sealed and delivered — it is now law,” Mangwana wrote in a post on social media platform X, accompanied by a copy of the legislation.
The law includes a provision stipulating that the head of state will henceforth be elected by parliament rather than through a direct popular vote.
Indications that Mnangagwa, 83, intended to remain in power beyond the end of his second term in 2028 first emerged approximately two years ago, when his supporters began chanting slogans at ZANU-PF party rallies calling for more time for him to complete his political agenda.
Last year, the ruling ZANU-PF party passed a resolution to amend the constitution and extend presidential terms, a proposal that received cabinet approval in February.
