Zambia: World Bank Grants $200M to Expand Access to Clean and Sustainable Energy

The World Bank has approved a $200 million grant for Zambia through its International Development Association (IDA). The funding will support the 13th phase of the Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) program.

According to African Mining Market, the project aims to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to over one million Zambians within five years. The initiative will focus on electrifying remote rural areas and improving energy access for businesses across the country.

Zambia relies heavily on hydroelectric power. However, frequent droughts often impair this energy source, leading to recurrent power outages. To address this vulnerability, authorities are increasing investments in alternative energy sources.

“We are excited to embark on this new phase and look forward to the positive impact it will have on local communities,” said Yadviga Viktorivna Semikolenova, the World Bank’s Energy Practice Manager for Eastern and Southern Africa.

To diversify its energy sources, Zambia has adopted off-grid solutions. In June, a public-private partnership began building 43 solar mini-grids, which are expected to supply electricity to nearly 100,000 people in isolated rural areas.

Access to energy remains unequal in the African nation. In 2023, only 53.6% of the population had access to electricity. Urban coverage reached 80.3%, while rural areas lagged behind at just 34.9%.

The ASCENT program seeks to bridge this gap. Alongside infrastructure development, it will introduce new technologies and train local communities to manage and maintain energy systems.
