The US State Department announced on Wednesday (23) an additional $267 million in funding to combat the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, as health authorities seek to contain the deadly virus.
Senior State Department officials announced the funding on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, in the hope of securing commitments from other countries to reach the $2 billion target for combating the disease, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Detected in May, the outbreak is already the second deadliest on record, behind the one that occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016.
On Wednesday, Congolese Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka described the situation as a “major test” for the country.
“For the DRC, combating this epidemic is an absolute priority. After containing 16 previous outbreaks, the DRC is mobilising recognised scientific expertise and operational experience. And, thanks to national mobilisation and the support of our partners, the response has recently begun to produce concrete results,” she told the United Nations General Assembly.
The commitment announced by the United States raises to $886 million the amount made available by the Donald Trump Administration for the response to the disease, including $107 million from the Department of Health and Human Services, in addition to the State Department funding.
The assistance will help strengthen the response in affected countries and contain the spread at its source, according to a US official. Measures include the construction of treatment facilities, the provision of diagnostic equipment and the supply of medical countermeasures to healthcare workers on the ground.
