Top Ten African Countries With the Highest Fuel Prices in September 2024

In many African countries, fuel costs are affected by an array of variables, including those beyond the continent. Most African countries import their fuels due to a lack of fuel production or refining capabilities. This, in turn, can result in high energy costs relative to a country’s purchasing power.

High fuel costs in several African countries have been a persistent issue, affecting economies, businesses, and residents’ everyday lives.

While Africa has vast reserves of oil (particularly in Nigeria, Angola, and Algeria), the majority of its crude oil is exported due to a lack of processing infrastructure.

Many African nations rely largely on imported refined petroleum, which raises transportation and importation expenses, resulting in higher pricing.

In turn, these high fuel prices have a direct influence on transportation costs, resulting in higher pricing for products and services, especially in nations where road transit is the primary way of transporting things.

Additionally, fuel-intensive businesses, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and mining, are immediately impacted by increased fuel costs.

Increased production costs can diminish profitability and stifle expansion, particularly for small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) that rely on fuel for power generation in locations with unstable energy supply.

With that said, these are the ten African countries with the most expensive fuel in September 2024. This list is courtesy of GlobalPetrolPrices.com and was last updated on 9th of September, 2024.

The global average price for fuel is presently 1.29 U.S. dollars per liter, compared to 1.31 U.S. dollars per liter last month.

Despite the global average decline in fuel prices, fuel costs in Seychelles, Zimbabwe, CAR, Senegal, and Ivory Coast increased slightly in September compared to the previous month.

Malawi and Morocco’s prices for the month fell little, whereas Kenya’s pricing remained the same at $1,453.

Uganda and Sierra Leone were removed off the top ten list in September, while Mauritius and Burkina Faso were added.
