The 10 African Countries With the Most Powerful Passports at the Start of 2026 Are…?

Travel can be difficult, especially for Africans, with visa restrictions making some trips more complicated than others. But at the start of 2026, some countries on the continent offer relatively greater mobility. Travelling is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and how far your passport can take you makes all the difference.

The Henley Passport Index, which tracks 199 passports and 227 destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), reveals the countries that open the most doors for their citizens.

In Africa, Seychelles leads, ranking 24th globally, granting access to 154 countries. Mauritius comes second on the continent, with access to 147 countries and the 27th position globally, while South Africa ranks third, allowing entry to 101 countries and placing 48th worldwide.

Globally, Singapore tops the list, providing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 192 countries, closely followed by Japan and South Korea, each with access to 188 destinations.

Below are the ten most powerful African passports at the start of 2026:

1. Seychelles – 24th globally
In 2026, Seychelles holds the strongest passport in Africa, ranking 24th worldwide, with visa-free access to 154 countries. This represents a slight decline from 2025, when it ranked 25th with access to 156 countries, but it still allows Seychellois citizens to travel easily across Europe, Asia, and the Americas for business, tourism, and international commitments.

In 2026, Seychelles has the strongest passport in Africa, ranking 24th globally.

2. Mauritius – 27th globally
Mauritius holds the second strongest passport in Africa, ranking 27th worldwide, with visa-free access to 147 countries. Although the number of accessible countries has slightly decreased from 151 in 2025, its global ranking improved.

South Africa ranks 48th worldwide, offering visa-free access to 101 countries. While its ranking remains stable, the number of accessible countries has slightly decreased from 106 in 2025.

In 2026, Botswana ranks 59th worldwide, granting visa-free access to 81 countries. Although its ranking has slightly dropped from 57th in 2025, it continues to provide strong regional and continental mobility, particularly within Africa.

5. Namibia – 62nd globally
Namibia ranks 62nd, offering visa-free access to 76 countries. While the number of accessible territories has decreased from 81 in 2025, its ranking remains stable, supporting regional travel and selected international opportunities.

6. Lesotho – 63rd globally
Lesotho ranks 63rd worldwide, granting visa-free access to 74 countries. Although the number of accessible countries has declined from 79 in 2025, its ranking has slightly improved from 64th.

7. Eswatini – 65th globally
In 2026, Eswatini holds the 65th global position, with visa-free access to 72 countries. While the number of accessible territories decreased from 77 in 2025, its ranking remains unchanged, with stronger mobility within Africa and limited international reach.

8. Morocco – 65th globally
Morocco ranks 65th worldwide, providing visa-free access to 72 countries. This is an improvement from 69th in 2025, moving from the 10th to the 8th strongest passport in Africa. Hosting the African Cup of Nations likely strengthened travel and diplomatic agreements, facilitating mobility across Africa, Europe, and selected Asian destinations.

Morocco ranks 65th globally, offering visa-free access to 72 countries.

9. Malawi – 66th globally
In 2026, Malawi ranks 66th globally, granting visa-free access to 71 countries. Although it has slightly dropped from 67th in 2025, the passport continues to support regional travel and selective international mobility.

10. Kenya – 68th globally
Kenya ranks 68th worldwide in 2026, offering visa-free access to 69 countries. Its ranking remains stable since 2025, supporting regional and continental mobility, although several international destinations still require visas.
