South Africa's private sector activity expanded modestly in August, with a rise in new orders driving output and purchasing, according to a business survey released on Thursday, 3 September.
The S&P Global Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for South Africa rose to 50.5 points in August, up from 50.3 points in July.
The 50-point threshold separates expansion from contraction in economic activity.
New orders increased marginally, with surveyed companies reporting larger orders, contract awards and higher sales as customers' financial conditions improved.
Output expanded for the second consecutive month and recorded its strongest pace since April. Purchasing activity also rose at its fastest rate since March, helping to lift stocks of raw materials at the sharpest pace in four months.
Export sales registered only a slight expansion and reached their lowest level in three months, according to the survey.
"Survey comments suggest that business expectations also depend on a recovery in domestic and external economic conditions, indicating that the path to stronger growth remains uncertain," said David Owen, Senior Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
