South Africa announced Sunday that it will recall two million covid-19 vaccines from Johnson & Johnson (J&J) due to “a non-compliance issue” during their manufacture in the United States. The South African drug agency (Sahpra) said in a statement that it had “taken the decision not to distribute vaccines produced from batches of unsuitable components.”
The US authorities announced on Friday that “several batches,” or several million doses, manufactured in Baltimore in the United States, and whose production had to be halted several weeks ago, will have to be thrown away. Tests had revealed that components of the British AstraZeneca vaccine, manufactured at the same plant, had been mistakenly mixed with the J&J formula.
