The Japanese automaker Nissan Motor, facing financial difficulties, announced on Friday, 23 January, that it will sell its manufacturing assets in Rosslyn, South Africa, to the Chinese state-owned automaker Chery Automobile, for an undisclosed amount.
The Japanese company stated that the sale date and its financial impact are still being assessed, as regulatory approvals remain pending.
Production of the Navara pickup, the factory’s only model, will cease in May if the deal is completed, according to a company spokesperson.
“This measure is part of our ongoing recovery plan, under which we are closing or consolidating seven factories,” the spokesperson added, declining to confirm the factory’s production capacity.
Chery had stated in October that it was considering using another manufacturer’s facilities, forming a joint venture, or building its own plant in South Africa.
