South African companies met in Johannesburg to discuss trade with the United Kingdom through a specific agreement aimed at strengthening commercial relations between the two countries. The meeting focused on the SACUM-UK Economic Partnership Agreement, a free trade pact between Southern African countries and the UK that facilitates the movement of goods and services between the parties.
According to SABC News, the SACUM-UK Economic Partnership Agreement establishes a free trade framework, allowing the independent circulation of goods and services among the signatory countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, and Mozambique. The meeting brought together companies from key sectors, such as automotive and agriculture, which are crucial for both the South African and regional economy.
This event comes at a time of changes in global trade, with new tariffs and geopolitical tensions shaping commercial dynamics. South African companies were encouraged to explore the opportunities the agreement offers, especially during periods of economic uncertainty.
Neil Pollock, Vice President of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted: “If we look at our relations with the UK, we see that they are mature, well-understood, and trade routes work very well,” emphasizing South Africa’s role as a gateway for business in Africa.
Pollock added: “What many people forget is how South Africa is governance-oriented. That is why I believe many see the country as a gateway into Africa, because of how we conduct business.” He noted that political stability and a favorable business environment are essential to attract international investors.
The Johannesburg meeting underscored the SACUM-UK Economic Partnership Agreement as a strategic tool to strengthen trade between South Africa and the UK, while boosting regional exports to the British market. South African companies now have the opportunity to better position themselves within the new global trade dynamics.
