The summit, which will bring together the 27 EU member states and the 55 countries of the African Union (AU), will take place in a year that marks 25 years of partnership between the two blocs and “at a crucial moment as Angola assumes the rotating presidency of the African Union,” highlights a statement from the European Council.
The European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) will hold their 7th intercontinental summit in Luanda this November, focused on “strengthening cooperation,” the European Council announced today in a press release.
The partnership between the AU and EU was formally established in 2000 at the first Africa-EU Summit in Cairo.
Previous summits were held in Lisbon (2007), Tripoli (2010), Brussels (2014), Abidjan (2017), and again in Brussels (2022).
The goal of the Luanda summit is to deepen cooperation “in key areas such as peace and security, economic integration, trade, multilateralism, green development, digitalization, migration, mobility, and human development,” the statement details.
The summit will be co-chaired by the President of Angola, João Lourenço, and the President of the European Council, António Costa. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will also take part in the event.
The Luanda meeting “will build on the outcomes of the recent AU-EU ministerial meeting held in Brussels this past May.”
At that ministerial gathering, ministers reaffirmed “their commitment to strengthening ties between the two continents—guided by shared values, mutual interests, and a common vision for sustainable growth and stability.”
