The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has appointed economist Franz Ruch as adviser to the governors and seventh member of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the central bank announced on Thursday.
Ruch joins from the World Bank, where he served as a senior economist and contributed to research publications including the Global Economic Prospects report, according to a SARB statement cited by Reuters.
Prior to his time at the World Bank, Ruch worked in the SARB’s own economic research department, where he contributed to the development of economic models and to the preparation of the Monetary Policy Review.
Last week, during the announcement of its latest interest rate decision, the MPC raised the benchmark lending rate for the second time this year, citing ‘significant and persistent’ price shocks stemming from the war in Iran and the need to adopt a more restrictive monetary policy stance.
The central bank’s next monetary policy decision is expected to be announced in November.
