Formed in September 2020 by Abdulmalik Badamasi and Ayuba Abdullahi Mako, Viewmax aims to improve film distribution on the continent.
“It started from a discussion about how we would go to see a film that just came out in Nigeria, which was not available in our city. Interestingly, we live in a city of five million people, with no single way to see the film,” Badamasi said.
“So for weeks, we brainstormed on how we could solve the problem in a way that could be replicable and would effectively work across the continent. Fortunately, after many discussions, negotiations and partnerships with corporations, it became a possibility.”
Viewmax seeks to make movies available through an online platform, filling the gap between traditional movie theaters and streaming platforms.
“Movie producers and customers are excited about the flexibility our service will offer. Film producers will not have to wait in long lines for their films to be released in just a few theaters in the city across the continent, their films will now be able to reach millions more simultaneously across the continent in real time,” said Badamasi.
“Customers can now enjoy the best of the highest quality films as soon as they are released, at affordable prices, and regardless of where they live.”
The self-funded Viewmax is looking to increase its pre-seeding this year, and has already embarked on its first partner viewing center in northern Nigeria.
“We are particularly focusing on towns and communities without any access to a cinema, still faced with expensive alternatives,” Badamasi said.
“Our expansion plans include expanding into more African countries.”
Viewmax plans to earn revenue from its on-app VoD service, subscriptions, and ticket sales to customers.
