Kazakhstan and Malawi Establish Diplomatic Ties With Focus on Wheat Trade

Kazakhstan and Malawi have established diplomatic relations, with Kazakhstan exploring the possibility of exporting wheat to the Malawian market, while Malawi seeks to introduce tea, coffee, and macadamia nuts into the Kazakh market.

The agreement was formalised on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, following talks between Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mukhtar Tleuberdi, and Malawi's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Thapatula Chaponda.

The two ministers signed a joint communiqué formally establishing diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Malawi.

The understanding provides for strengthened political dialogue and the development of bilateral cooperation through regular contacts between their respective foreign ministries, as well as between businesses and academic institutions in the two countries.

During the meeting, the ministers also examined cooperation prospects across a range of sectors. On the trade front, discussions covered the potential supply of Kazakh wheat to Malawi. No volumes, delivery schedules, transport routes, or pricing terms have been disclosed at this stage.

Malawi, in turn, expressed interest in promoting products such as tea, coffee, and macadamia nuts in the Kazakh market, opening prospects for the development of bilateral trade flows between the two countries.

Beyond agricultural trade, the mining, digital innovation, education, and agriculture sectors were identified as areas with potential for future joint initiatives.

No concrete investment projects, companies involved, or financing amounts were announced. Discussions focused on identifying priority areas for the development of bilateral relations, without formalising specific commercial agreements at this stage.
