Italy and Africa Prepare for Strategic Mattei Plan Summit in Rome

Italy’s role as a bridge between Europe and Africa has once again taken centre stage, with growing diplomatic momentum ahead of the crucial Mattei Plan summit scheduled for 20 June in Rome.

At a recent conference organised by the Articolo 49 Foundation, in collaboration with the Moroccan Embassy and the European Parliament, Moroccan Ambassador Youssef Balla highlighted the profound importance of Africa’s evolving relationship with Europe.

“Africa is not only the continent of tomorrow but of today,” Ambassador Balla emphasised. He noted the continent’s vast natural resources, rapidly expanding markets, and youthful population, underscoring that African states seek partnerships grounded in mutual respect and equality. For African nations, the call is for concrete actions, sustainable investments, and genuine collaboration rather than superficial pledges.

The upcoming Mattei Plan summit in Rome is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in redefining Europe-Africa relations. Balla described the initiative as “a glimmer of hope,” urging European partners to actively listen to Africa’s needs and expectations.

Echoing this sentiment, the Dean of African Ambassadors and Eritrea’s Ambassador to Italy, Fessahazion Pietros Menghistu, stated that the Mattei Plan represents “a structured dialogue platform with strategic value.” He argued that the plan could serve as a model for future cooperation not only between Italy and Africa but between Europe and Africa at large.

As Rome prepares to host high-level discussions, the stakes are high. The Mattei Plan offers a rare opportunity to reset the tone of Euro-African relations, focusing on long-term, balanced partnerships that promote development, address climate resilience, and harness Africa’s potential as a global economic force.
