Iran Awaits US Response After Indirect Qatar-Mediated Talks

Iran’s foreign minister said on Monday that Tehran is awaiting a US response following indirect talks brokered by Qatar in New York, aimed at reaching an agreement to end the conflict.

In an interview with Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Abbas Araghchi said the delegation met with ‘Qatari mediators’ on Monday with the aim of ‘paving the way for the fulfilment of conditions’, after US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s proposal over the weekend.

On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Iran put forward a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and resume nuclear negotiations, in exchange for the United States lifting its naval blockade on Iranian ports, suspending oil sanctions against the country, and restoring a ceasefire.

Following Trump’s initial rejection — as he continues to press Tehran to make concessions on nuclear matters — the Iranians ‘again presented’ their ‘seven-point plan’ to the US side.

‘I can state categorically that there has been no change in Iran’s positions,’ Araghchi said.

‘If there is a response, Qatar will convey it to us and a decision will be made in Tehran based on it,’ he added, reiterating that ‘there will be no changes’ in Iran’s position regarding the Strait of Hormuz or the nuclear issue.

The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran is entering its eighth month and remains deadlocked, against a backdrop of intensifying US sanctions and sporadic attacks attributed to Tehran against oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Since the start of the conflict, several Middle Eastern countries hosting US military bases or diplomatic missions have been targeted in attacks attributed to Iran. Tehran has also disrupted maritime traffic through the strait via occasional strikes on vessels and ships.
