Husband of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan Dies in Zanzibar

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday (7) in Zanzibar after receiving treatment for a cardiac condition.

The death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who stated that Hafidh Ameir Hassan passed away at approximately 08:00 at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted. “It is with profound sadness that I announce the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi said, as quoted by the BBC.

The Vice President extended condolences to the head of state, the family, relatives, friends, and the people of Tanzania. Authorities announced that preparations for funeral ceremonies are already under way in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

The death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan prompted an outpouring of condolence messages across the African continent. Leaders from Kenya, Burundi, Zambia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Senegal, as well as representatives of the African Union, expressed solidarity with President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her family.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, offered his condolences to the Tanzanian leader and wished strength to the family during the period of mourning.

Kenyan President William Ruto said that Samia Suluhu Hassan had lost a “lifelong companion”, that her children had lost a father, and that Tanzania had lost “a distinguished son”. Hafidh Ameir Hassan was an academic with a background in agriculture who maintained a largely private public profile.

He married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, before she entered national politics. The couple had four children — three sons and one daughter. Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021, when Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed the presidency of the country.
