Governments of Cape Verde and Luxembourg Strengthen Climate Action Programme with an Additional €4 Million for 2026

The Governments of Cape Verde and Luxembourg approved on Wednesday (14) the 2026 operational plan for the archipelago’s Climate Action Programme, increasing the total budget by €4.1 million, reported Lusa.

“Luxembourg Cooperation has supported Cape Verde in strengthening climate governance, institutional capacity building, and the implementation of local adaptation and resilience actions, contributing to the fulfillment of national climate commitments defined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the National Adaptation Plan,” detailed the Cape Verdean government.

Cape Verde has been affected by prolonged droughts, as well as sudden floods, whose severity increased over the past year, alongside threats from rising sea levels and ocean acidification.

Management of the archipelago is increasingly linked to parameters of resilience to extreme events and climate change.

The updated technical and financial document of the programme, as well as the Annual Operational Plan for 2026, will be reviewed by the monitoring committee co-chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Gilberto Silva, and the Ambassador of Luxembourg to Cape Verde, Jean-Marie Frentz.

“This update represents an increase of €4.1 million to the total budget, now standing at €14.6 million, with a 2026 budget of approximately €4.25 million,” the government reported.

Cape Verde aims “to promote effective, inclusive, and results-oriented climate action, aligned with national sustainable development priorities and the specific challenges of a small island state, continuing to rely on partnership with Luxembourg for this purpose,” it concluded.
