South African mining group Gold Fields has expressed interest in acquiring Northern Star Resources, Australia's largest gold producer, Bloomberg reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the agency, Gold Fields recently approached Northern Star to discuss a potential transaction. However, the Australian company rebuffed the approach, and Gold Fields is now evaluating its next steps.
Gold Fields and Northern Star did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
Gold Fields announced in August that its first-half profit rose 81%, driven by higher gold prices, increased production, and stronger sales.
The Johannesburg-based miner posted earnings per share of US$2.08 for the six months ended 30 June, compared with US$1.15 in the same period of 2025.
At the time, Gold Fields also declared an interim dividend of US$1.01 per share, a 133% increase on the interim dividend paid in the prior year.
