Ethiopian Airlines Flies High with 13.9 Million Passengers in Nine Months

Ethiopian Airlines continues to reinforce its dominance in African aviation, having transported more than 13.9 million passengers in the first nine months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

The figures, reported by Fana Broadcasting Corporate, reaffirm the national carrier’s resilience and regional leadership in the sector.

Of the total passengers carried, over 11 million were international travellers, while nearly 2.9 million were domestic, reflecting the airline’s robust network and demand across both global and local markets. These results follow a strong performance in the previous fiscal year, during which Ethiopian Airlines generated $7.02 billion in revenue — a 14% increase year-on-year — and served a record-breaking 17.1 million passengers.

Underpinning this growth is the airline’s Vision 2035 strategy, a long-term plan aimed at transforming Ethiopian Airlines into one of the world’s most competitive aviation groups. Beyond passenger and cargo services, Vision 2035 covers expansion into aviation training, airport management, and ground operations.

A landmark step in achieving this vision was taken in March 2025, when Ethiopian Airlines partnered with the African Development Bank to finance the construction of a new $7.8 billion mega-airport. Set to raise the country’s annual passenger handling capacity from 17 million to over 60 million by 2040, this ambitious project reflects Ethiopia’s national strategy to become Africa’s premier air transport and logistics hub.

As the airline expands its global footprint and invests in infrastructure and human capital, Ethiopian Airlines stands at the forefront of Africa’s aviation resurgence, bridging continents and advancing regional integration with each flight.
