A US citizen working for a humanitarian organisation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has tested positive for the Ebola virus, specifically the bundibugyo strain, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on Friday, according to Reuters.
The CDC said it is working with the affected worker’s employer, other federal agencies, and partners in the DRC to help prevent further transmission and identify high-risk contacts.
A US State Department spokesperson said on Saturday that the agency is aware of the case and is providing support to the affected American citizen, while declining to offer further details.
In June, hundreds of people took to the streets in the Kenyan town of Nanyuki, in the centre of the country, to protest against US plans to establish an Ebola quarantine unit at a local military base. The demonstration came days after Kenya’s High Court ordered a temporary suspension of the project, which was intended to treat American citizens infected with the virus.
According to the latest update from DRC authorities, the death toll from the current Ebola outbreak has risen to 648, while confirmed cases have increased to 1,830.
The new figures represent an increase of 23 deaths and 38 infections compared to the tally released on Thursday, confirming the worsening trajectory of the outbreak, which is already considered the third largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded.
