Cape Verde’s transport registered year-on-year growth in cargo and passengers in the third quarter of this year, in all the statistical indicators released today.
Air transport saw the biggest increases, reflecting a year in which foreign tourist visits have been growing more than expected.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Cape Verde saw a 15.7 per cent rise in passenger traffic, a 10.9 per cent increase in aircraft movements, a 41.6 per cent increase in cargo and a 22 per cent increase in mail movements.
In the ports, the number of ships grew by 1.8 per cent, the total number of passengers rose by 4.6 per cent and the tonnage of goods handled grew by 8 per cent.
Urban public transport buses received 1.4 per cent more passengers.
In November, the Bank of Cape Verde (BCV) revised upwards its forecasts for the growth of the archipelago’s economy this year and next, to 6.1 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively, mainly due to the higher than expected boost from the tourism sector.
In the same month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) improved its estimates by 1.3 percentage points for this year (to 6 per cent) and by 0.3 percentage points for 2025 (4.7 per cent).
