Foreign aid to Cape Verde increased 10.5% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 17.6 million euros, according to central bank data cited by Lusa.
The central government was the main direct recipient, receiving 17.3 million euros, equivalent to 98%. Municipal governments received just over 340,000 euros.
Analyzing the source of the funds, contributions from partner governments grew by 45%, while contributions from supranational organizations fell by a quarter compared to the same period last year.
Non-governmental organizations did not make any disbursements in the first quarter of 2026, after having channeled approximately 700,000 euros during the same period in 2025.
As for the type of aid, cash donations fell by 8.9%, but continue to account for the largest share (about two-thirds), with the remainder coming from in-kind donations, which more than doubled, driven by the delivery of equipment.
The previous Cape Verdean government (a new administration was elected in May) argued that the country should begin to live without donations as it develops, while donors have pointed to a reduction in funding due to other international needs.
Cape Verde was reclassified as an upper-middle-income country by the World Bank in 2025.
